Includes descriptions of fires, outbreaks of plague and cholera, hostility of ruling government, and other difficulties faced by missionaries. Letters of Goodell's daughter and grandaughter, Mary Goodell Barnum and Emma Barnum, describe conditions at Harput, Turkey, during the widespread massacre of Armenians by the Kurds.
